Social Search Engine Wars Are Underway
Have you noticed how both Google and Bing have been active lately with the updates of social search methods in their search results ? Many traders rely heavily on traffic from search engines particularly the organic results, so it is important to stay abreast of what is happening in the landscape of search engines. More importantly, marketers need to understand where search marketing is going in relation to social search.
Search Engines Are Concentrating On Social Search
Google and Bing recently made announcements regarding the integration in the search results of content retrieved from your social circle. Google has announced expansion plans for Social search. In the first expansion in social search, Google gave the opportunity to enter search results in real time with options in their navigation. For example, you could see what people around you, said in their blog, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and even Facebook pages.
However, these results were presented separately, accessible through the left navigation. The most recent announcement is different in that the Google social search results will be incorporated into the main search results. Another important fact is that some sites are expected to rank better or worse depending on the extent to which people have linked to its social search content through blogs or Twitter.
Currently, Google search results do not include social search “likes” from Facebook. We can only guess that Google did not have the same access to “Likes” due to the Microsoft Bing strategic relationship with Facebook. There is speculation however that this will eventually change. The impact can be huge, it is well known that people are very influenced by the opinions of others to the extent that opinions are expressed in a credible way. If our friends are online and commenting or liking content and providing feedback, these observations may have a huge influence on the potential customers selection.
Social Search Is Not New
Social search is not new, but the Semantic Web is emerging before our eyes. The competition between Google and Microsoft Bing and Facebook users will continue to offer marketing changes which should make the experience new and interesting. Even more important, is not whether people can find using social search, but it is what friends comments they find because the idea of social search is to facilitate the decision making influence. As a consumer, you want to find useful information to help you make a decision.
So the best advice we have for traders is to think like a buyer. You must be actively building a community around good product performance. The problem products or services will be the big losers. Good products with good results that are supported by the marketing community would be a real commitment and win the favor of social search engine results.
