Social Search Engine Wars

www.LocalFind.BizSocial Search Engine Wars Are Underway

Have you noticed how both Google and Bing have been active lately with the updates of social search methods in their search results ? Many traders rely heavily on traffic from search engines particularly the organic results, so it is important to stay abreast of what is happening in the landscape of search engines. More importantly, marketers need to understand where search marketing is going in relation to social search.

Social SearchSearch Engines Are Concentrating On Social Search

Google and Bing recently made announcements regarding the integration in the search results of content retrieved from your social circle. Google has announced expansion plans for Social search. In the first expansion in social search, Google gave the opportunity to enter search results in real time with options in their navigation. For example, you could see what people around you, said in their blog, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and even Facebook pages.

However, these results were presented separately, accessible through the left navigation. The most recent announcement is different in that the Google social search results will be incorporated into the main search results. Another important fact is that some sites are expected to rank better or worse depending on the extent to which people have linked to its social search content through blogs or Twitter.

Currently, Google search results do not include social search “likes” from Facebook. We can only guess that Google did not have the same access to “Likes” due to the Microsoft Bing strategic relationship with Facebook. There is speculation however that this will eventually change. The impact can be huge, it is well known that people are very influenced by the opinions of others to the extent that opinions are expressed in a credible way. If our friends are online and commenting or liking content and providing feedback, these observations may have a huge influence on the potential customers selection.

Social Search Is Not New

Social search is not new, but the Semantic Web is emerging before our eyes. The competition between Google and Microsoft Bing and Facebook users will continue to offer marketing changes which should make the experience new and interesting. Even more important, is not whether people can find using social search, but it is what friends comments they find because the idea of social search is to facilitate the decision making influence. As a consumer, you want to find useful information to help you make a decision.

So the best advice we have for traders is to think like a buyer. You must be actively building a community around good product performance. The problem products or services will be the big losers. Good products with good results that are supported by the marketing community would be a real commitment and win the favor of social search engine results.

Now it is time for companies to join the movement with the idea that marketing department is not wholly responsible for the company or product performance in social search any more but in fact it is everyone’s responsibility when participating from the company or business in social media.

Google has more than 200 algorithms, and Bing claims more than 1,000. Both companies keep their search algorithms top secret. Adding new social cues has probably added a lot of extra algorithms as well. When you are logged into Facebook, the Bing search engine not only presents the results based on what you seem to “like”, but also what their friends also “like” and Friends of friends also “like”.

Bing was able to access information more easily using the Facebook OpenGraph than Google due to the Bing and Facebook partnership. Twitter is indexed more by Google than Facebook. In fact, Twitter is a leap forward in social indexing as it will allow a concept known as social authority.  Author Authority is a term that Google uses to describe authoritative people on Twitter that affect social cues. Bing calls this social authority. Authoritative voices on social networks will gather more attention in the search engine results.

Twitter has a strong impact on Google’s and also Bing’s indexing. What this means is that progress regarding the online marketing game has changed. Companies and brands will need to build strong social media profiles to still stay relevant to search engines in the future.

Thus, most Hispanics online research and shop so companies must find effective ways to market to them. Search engine marketing is a very viable option. Hispanics are more likely than the general market of the United States to use the search engine to compare prices of the product or service, find the newest product or service they have heard about elsewhere, Find coupons for discounts or rebates on products and to learn of a new product or service.

Hispanics Use Search Engines Widely

Since search engines are heavy Hispanic research products, you are better able to influence the purchasing decisions through the search engines, even if they buy offline. The Future Of Search

www.LocalFind.BizThe Future Of Search

A social search is a social result that links a researcher to requests for your search through a social network. Through social search, the researcher sees only results that are determined by the interests of its friends in the network. Google and Bing are two companies that have changed their search results with its own version of social search over a year ago. Since then they have continued to feature prominently in the results of social search and mixed the social search results with their regular search results in both the search engines.

Future Of SearchThe changes should not be taken lightly these changes point to the fact that both companies have acknowledged that the average Internet user, who now spends more time on Facebook may be demanding a new form of search.

Facebook Social Search

In fact, Facebook is a social network for many these days. It is the social center of our map, which is where we will find and read news. People will “like” a comment on articles and the widespread use of “like” buttons help us improve our graph of interest and become a way for us to express our approval for almost any thing on the web.

“Likes” have become so large that they factor in the Bing algorithm for social search results, and even have a place in how Blekko is organized. “Likes” also determine the popularity of the content that becomes the point inside and outside Facebook. Facebook and its grip on our attention raises the questions, do we still think of search queries on the basis of an explicit query? Or has the search in the traditional sense become outdated? Are social networks or information networks the new search engine? or are the new mobile applications the new search engines?

The Future Of Search Answer

The answer is probably all the above, because the investigation is being redefined by these factors. Let’s embrace the idea that the social side of the search is effortless and occurs as a familiar user experience, whether it is on mobile, social or search as certainly these need to be combined.

As the investigation unfolds certainly there is something much larger than the results of social search that need to be strengthened. The average Facebook user does not say “I want to search the most popular stories among my Facebook friends.” No. Facebook is doing the work for them by developing a search experience highlighting socially relevant content. A social search engine that requires the user to reflect on the content of the social network is one that seems to lose the point.

Right now the search companies are scratching the surface of what is possible when you’re growing social graph becomes closely related to the use of search. But as time passes, the experience of social search will be so fluid that the search user will not even know that it is occurring.

Anne Kennedy, Beyond Ink, interviews Duane Forrester, Bing, and Rob Garner, iCrossing, on the future of search at SES New York 2011. The message to marketers, according to Duane, is to invest in rich snippets through your websites. Bing wants to know what your content is and the more detail you can give Bing, the better you can tag it and make it more useful for Bing to crawl. Content is king, according to Duane.

Stick to generating organic links within your content and use relevant anchor text. The most powerful links are the ones embedded in the content these are organic links that a user can click on while they are reviewing the content and be able to click on links that provide additional quality content.

Rob says search marketers will have to work on retaining their core SEO practices, such as creating great content and be more engaging with their content, including deeper research of their audience, providing the right information they are seeking.

With great content comes the need to provide great links. Rob says social networks will become more important in passing referrals and or sharing content. Bing has formed a relationship with Facebook. Bing is looking to social networks as a great signal when it comes to featuring quality content.

Duane says social networking started with popular reviews then moved on to expert reviews and today we’re moving to more trusted reviews. Anne asks Rob and Duane to comment on the future of augmented reality.

SEO Website Link Building Tips

www.LocalFind.BizSEO (Search Engine Optimization) Website Link Building

SEO link building is one of the most important things you can use for website promotion. Remember that on page SEO optimization is very important and should be completed before you are looking to promote your website. Once your website is running and fully on page SEO optimized, the next thing to do is to build quality links to other websites that can help your site appear higher in search engine results pages (SERPS).

Here are some valuable tips for building SEO search engine optimization links. If you are an expert in SEO these tips will recall the key strategies for link building and search engine relationships.

SEO Search Engine OptimizationSEO Choosing High Quality Links

Not all links are weighted equally. SEO links that are valuable offer more advantages than the optimization of low quality links. There are several factors that can determine the quality of the site you are looking to for a link. The reputation and credibility of the domain, which gives the site links. For example, a link from a well known and very popular website has a higher value relative to a link to a site that ranks a lot lower.

Ask yourself what is the relevance of the anchor text that is in the link. This means that the anchor text that says “Local Search” would be more relevant and useful if your website was discussing the Local Search topic than a simple “click here” anchor text. A link in relation to the location of the site structure needs to also be looked at for obvious reasons, SEO links embedded on the home page of the site are more useful than a link that is hidden all the way down on a well-hidden obscure web page.

There are also cases where the incoming link is placed on a web page but way down on the bottom of the page. Web site links at the top of a web page are obviously more visible than those way below and offer better SEO benefits. Similarly, a link that is one of three on a page is more precious than the relationship that it is one of 80 other links on a web page.

Now you have an idea of how the website gives the SEO value, the question is: How do I get high quality links? The suggestions that follow illustrate the different methods of effective search engine optimization, link building.

Create Content That Is Useful Relevant And Interesting For Better SEO

Website content of a superior quality remains an effective method to get links from other SEO friendly sites. With great content, not only will you be able to build backlinks naturally but also asking for a link will also be easier as the partner site can benefit from the link request as well. Furthermore, the strengthening of good content is one way to get all the free SEO links you will need. All you have to do is create a website with good content, and the web links will come naturally.

SEO Link Building with Blog and RSS Feeds

Promoting your site through blogs and RSS feeds is an easy and great way for improving your site’s visibility and SEO link building opportunities. Readers of blogs are always looking for interesting sites and posts. If your site is listed under the blog and RSS directories out there then there is a greater chance that your site can be found by interested readers.

Submitting To Directories For Better SEO

Another easy way to get links to Web sites is by performing directory submissions. Although this method does not give many good quality SEO links it is a good place to start if you’re new to link building and search engine optimization. There are two ways to submit your site to directories. You can use a directory submission service that automatically sends your site to over 100 directory libraries, or you can manually submit the site yourself.

If you decide to submit to directories our suggestion is that you submit to the directories manually (most popular directories generally do not accept automated submissions). We have found that automated directory submissions are generally not reliable and think of it this way, if you were the administrator of the directory I am sure you would also be looking for better links for SEO reasons as well rather than an automated services just shooting links by the billions to your directory.

Research Your Competitors SEO Links

Search for sites that offer links to the web sites of your competitors. This is a good way to start your SEO efforts to link building and web sites that are related to your competitors may also be interested in a link to your site as well. However, before using this strategy, make sure your site is as good as it gets. There are many SEO tools for creating links that can help you review your competitors SEO link building strategy.

Do Not Purchase Links For Better SEO

Google is becoming tougher on rental or paid links. The reason Google put the brakes on paid links are obvious if you need to pay for SEO links on your site then your site is perceived as low quality and also your links will be there one day and then suddenly disappear when you stop renting. This it is a very short sighted strategy. Remember that you’re in this for the long term, you do not want to jeopardize your web site with low quality methods and link building strategies that are not reliable.

Local Directories For Better SEO

Web site owners who have a business of brick and mortar can find local directories very useful in their search engine optimization link building campaign. For example, you can submit your site to the local business directories. Not only will you receive high quality SEO links, your site will also be represented on regional search engines to find local customers and you could even obtain a higher search engine ranking.

Press Releases For Better SEO

Do not underestimate the power of press releases. If you write something interesting about your business, website or company, chances are good that your press release will be picked up by news organizations. This can be a huge generator of site visits and an opportunity for better links for your SEO purposes.

Participating In Forums, Blogs and Social Media For Better SEO

Interacting in communities, forums and social media is another great way to get SEO links pointing to your site. Forum users are generally free to post links to their websites in the footer of posts. It is very important to make sure you are not generating spam. You should contribute positively to the forum. Moreover, many forums are labeled “nofollow” so that these sites inbound links can not increase the website ranking. However, while communities and forums can not help your SEO efforts as much as they used to in previous years, they can help increase your site traffic, especially if other forum or social media users are interested in what you are saying.

Australian Businesses Go Online

www.LocalFind.BizAustralian Businesses Online

Article first published as Australian Businesses Go Online on Technorati. Australian businesses are not online because they believe it is too expensive or too complicated, and simply have no time. However, for a Web site for Australian businesses to be effective, this is based on the input of keywords that potential customers would be using in the search terms for the investigation of a company. An important advantage of creating a site using MYOB Atlas is that it “automatically optimizes” in Google.

Watch the video below from the Getting Australian Businesses Online Launch Event

The Local Find Test Of Australian Businesses

Google and accounting software provider MYOB have announced an initiative to get 50,000 Australian businesses online for free. “Getting Aussie Business Online ” www.gettingbusinessonline.com.au” aims to provide free websites for small businesses in Australia with the creation of a tool named MYOB Atlas being used to build the Australian Businesses website.

Watch the video below about Getting Australian Businesses Online and MYOB Atlas

Local Find decided test the small Australian businesses websites to see if they would be “automatically optimised” on Google and found to the test and we checked their very first customer’s website details to see if in fact this was the case. The customer featured in the first video from Google and MYOB was Randall’s Excavation & Earthmoving.

The Fundamentals For Australian Businesses Online Are Being Missed

Testing the first Australian Businesses online with this initiative:

RANDALL’S EXCAVATIONS & EARTHMOVING PTY LTD – Excavations and earthmoving services in Sydney

Local Find believes that the fundamentals of any Australian Businesses website should be that it is locally found using local search results. Local customers are looking for local businesses so we performed a search for “excavations sydney” following the name of the website since as you can see above the word “Excavations” is appearing twice in the website name as well as the word “Sydney” which will allow for a local identifier to be used by Google and we found the following Google local search results.

Australian Businesses Excavations SydneyAustralian Businesses Excavations Sydney 2The Local Find test showed that the business tested was not found in the local search results performed using Google for “excavations sydney” as the search term which we believe to be a fundamental search for the small business being tested to be found by local customers. Local Find eventually found the business we tested located on Google on Page 16 of the search results but actually listed under the following URL.

http://www.sydneywebguide.com.au/1/excavating-earth-moving-contractors/north-curl-curl-randalls-excavations-earthmoving/

Update : Since the publication of this article on Technorati on 13/04/2011 the Google and MYOB supplied website for RANDALL’S EXCAVATIONS & EARTHMOVING PTY LTD – Excavations and earthmoving services in Sydney has now been indexed and placed on Page 5 of the Google Australia search results following another test performed this afternoon 14/04/2011 by Local Find.

Australian Businesses Need To Be Found In Local Search Results

Local Find believes that for many small Australian businesses to compete online that Search Engine Optimisation techniques and Local Search Results are fundamental for any small business to compete and be found in search results by local customers. Local Find does believe that it is a great “first step” by Google and MYOB to at least start getting Australian Businesses online but Australian Businesses also need to understand that there are a lot of other factors that allow a website to rank well for local customers.

Australian Businesses Are Being Searched For Everyday

Australians send their taxes online, 4,000 Google searches daily in Australia are for accountants. The software from Google and MYOB is designed to remove barriers for small Australian businesses to get online by making it easy, fast and free to create and maintain a website. This means that Google will identify and index the keywords used in the description of your business, once you have finished setting up your website, but as the Local Find test shows the fundamentals of local search techniques and search engine optimization are being missed.

Australian’s also go online to renew their kitchens, and 12,000 searches a day in Australia are for manufacturers. Australian’s like to find a location nearby for a coffee in the morning as the number of Google searches show that of 30,000 searches per day are for cafes in Australia. In order to compete Australian businesses these days particularly small Australian Businesses are finding that having a website is as important as having a phone. Aussie Business Online is a national campaign from Google and MYOB to provide free website to over 50,000 small Australian Businesses.

Small Australian businesses can get a basic website format from MYOB and Google, which allows you to display photos, opening hours and includes a description of your business. Millions of Internet searches in Australia are for local shops and services. There are two thirds of Aussie small businesses, which are invisible to the Australian customers online. According to the MYOB Business Monitor survey, only one of three Aussie small businesses have websites.

Local Find actually applauds the initiative of getting Australian Businesses online from both Google and MYOB but as the Local Find test shows ranking in local search results are a different matter entirely.

The New Android Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

The other major difference with the new Android tabs are that they use a custom Samsung interface instead of the default Android interface. The iPad 2 has met with rave reviews overseas, but those of you who are Android fans and not into the iTunes ecosystem may be wise to wait for the Samsung Android Galaxy Tab. The tablet is optimised on the Google Android  Honeycomb operating system and from what we have seen it is a very impressive offering.

Lesser known brands such as Acer and Viewsonic will also have Android tablet models available in Australia very shortly. The Android Samsung Galaxy tablet  is super fast over Wi-Fi and great for reading the news, with Honeycomb adding support for tabbed browsing on the Android Samsung Galaxy tablet.

The Android Samsung Galaxy Tab Hardware

The 1GHz Nvidia dual core processor is more than capable of handling day to day tasks, while the Android Samsung Galaxy tablet includes 16GB of storage space (only about 14GB of which was actually usable). At 599 grams, the Android Galaxy Tab is around the same weight as the iPad 2 at 601 grams and lighter than the original iPad at 680g and the Xoom at 730g. As the name suggests, the Samsung Android Galaxy Tab offers a 10.1 inch screen with a 1280×800 resolution the same as the Xoom and slightly larger than the iPad’s. The screen is a TFT LCD panel and we found it to be extremely bright and crisp. The touchscreen is fast, while the interface is slick and intuitive.

You can also avoid much typing using the top quality Google Voice search feature on the Android Samsung Galaxy. Web browsing is among the best we have seen on a mobile device. Full multitasking is supported, with one touch showing a list of currently open apps with thumbnails so you can preview the exact page you were on.

There are some impressive apps on offer on the Android Galaxy Tab especially those made by Google itself. The Android Galaxy Tab has got two superb cameras the rear one can take 8 megapixel shots and also record 1080p HD video, while the front 2 megapixel camera can be used for video conferencing. There are five different home screens that can be fully customised with Android widgets and apps. It feels great in the hand and is fairly thin 9mm, but not as thin as the 8mm iPad. Samsung in the US announced an updated version of the Android Galaxy Tab that is slimmer than the iPad 2 at 6mm.

The Google Maps app is also impressive and includes Street View support, turn by turn navigation and the ability to browse nearby cafes, restaurants and shops. The new Android tablet interface for Gmail is, in short, awesome, as is the YouTube app, which displays a range of videos on its main page in a sexy rotating grid. We have fallen in love with the intuitive interface of the camera app, with a range of settings and effects accessible within a few touches. There is no microSD slot to expand the storage space and Samsung clarified that this feature is only available on the updated version that will launch in the third quarter of this year. The on screen keyboard Google created for Honeycomb on the Android is about as nice as they come with keys all well spaced out.
