2. Another important measure you can take to increase data security is to check for viruses and malware by scanning your computer regularly using a reliable and up-to-date anti-virus software. If the scan detects any suspicious programs or applications make sure you remove them straight away as unethical people will use viruses and malware to create back doors to access personal data on your computer.

3. Make sure that the operating system and browser you are using are secure with the latest updates as the major vendors will release regular updates of their programs to increase data security. Whether you’re using Windows, Mac OS or another operating system, you can use automatic updates, if one is available for the operating system make sure you upgrade when you get the message. To manually check for updates of Internet Explorer, click the Tools tab and click Windows Update. In Firefox, click the Help tab and click Check for Updates. Please note that Google Chrome will automatically update to a newer version when it is published by Google to increase the data security of the browser.

4. Protect your password and register to get it using a 2 step verification process to further increase your data security. Change your password regularly and do not show it to others at anytime. Google recommends changing your passwords at an interval of at least twice a year. Remember to choose a password that contains a combination of numbers, characters and case sensitive letters in your password to make the account password data security stronger. In order to increase the protection, you should enable a 2 step verification of the Google Account. 2 step verification requires a verification code that will be sent to your mobile phone along with your username and password to enable you to login.

5. Protect yourself from internet phishing never enter your password or account information when you see a link in an email or chat on an untrusted website there are many false emails being sent to users from unethical people trying to get you to expose your data security information. Instead, go directly to the website you know as the trusted source. Do not send your password via e-mail or write it down. Google will never ask for your password or other sensitive information via email.

The use of public or shared computers represent serious data security risks. If you must use a shared computer always log out of your account when you use public computers. When you have finished using your Google account, click “Logout” in the upper right corner of the screen. Also make sure that you clear your private data from the browser on the computer you are using as your browser can be configured to hide certain data security information. Remember to remove the data, including passwords, cache, form data and cookies on a regular basis from the browser, especially just after using a public computer.
