Google has just shed some light on how its keeps adjusting the algorithms to improve search results. Last year, Google made over 500 improvements in its search algorithms. Amit Singhal from Google explains how each new change is based on a smart idea. But if the ideas do not pass the rigorous testing of the Google company they are not added to the Google search algorithm.

In the video posted below you will see how Google engineers, each with their own ideas about how a change in the algorithm moves from an idea to actual implementation. As a first step to improve the search experience for users, Google often begins with a series of ongoing investigations into search queries that do not provide the search results as expected. Engineers, then put their heads together to determine what data can be integrated into an algorithm to improve this kind of Google search.

Google Tests All Changes To Its Search Algorithm

To test all the new experiences of the engineers at Google they use the experience of people who have been trained to evaluate and compare different search rankings. Some of the changes also apply to a small number of real Google search users in a virtual sandbox. Last year alone, Google made more than 20,000 different tests.

An analyst then analyzes the test data and meets with other researchers at Google to determine whether a change should be extended to all Google users. “If our scientific evidence says it is a good idea for Google users, we will launch in Google,” Singhal said in the video.

Google Search And Misspelled Words

For example, Google has for years made spelling suggestions for queries that it considers contain typos or other errors. In the past, the results would always respond with “Did you mean?” questions with the corrected spelling, but will always show you the results based on the misspelled word. Google would force users to click on the “Did you mean?” link to get the correct results. In order to better deal with the typos, Google has developed a new option that now shows the results for the correct spelling. But Google also allows users to search by the misspelled word as well.

While Google is still the major search engine by quite a wide margin, the competing Bing is slowly taking some market share. Due to the sheer amount of data and also the complexity of the data now available online, the search process is not as simple as it used to be.

Microsoft unveiled a new version of Xbox Live, which includes more voice commands for the Bing search engine, YouTube integration and live TV. Microsoft demonstrated the simplified user interface, which you can navigate almost entirely by voice commands allowing you to search through games and access to online content.

Xbox Live Is Now Powered By Bing

Search on Xbox Live is now powered by the Bing search engine. Instead of typing in queries via the controller, Microsoft has chosen to allow you to now use voice search. Bing Voice Search allows users to browse the movies and games libraries. But it does not yet include a complete search the web. Microsoft also announced that it has finally been integrated into YouTube on Xbox Live, which allows you to view videos on the world’s largest video site. Microsoft already has Hulu and Netflix on Xbox Live.

The biggest message from Microsoft is the inclusion of live TV on Xbox Live. Microsoft partners such as Sky in the UK have helped the Xbox to obtain live feeds so that Xbox Live now has live streaming video content. Bing has added a new feature this week so that now Facebook integrates with the search results produced on Bing Shopping. Now users can create a shopping list on the Bing search engine and then display that shopping list on the users Facebook wall to get feedback from friends and family in your Facebook network. When shopping on Bing you now have the option to click “Add to List” for any item you find on Bing. A module of the shopping list appears in the bottom left of the screen so that users can follow the progress of the products and share them with friends and family on Facebook.

With Bing you do not have to shop alone again because you can build your shopping list to share, compare and discuss with your friends on Facebook. From finding the best price on something to getting opinions of people you know and trust on Facebook, or simply just asking if something suits you or not.

Bing Making Shopping Socially Based With Facebook

Bing says that the idea is to make the search experience more socially based so that it allows users to get their Facebook friends involved in the purchasing decisions. Customers may request the opinion of people in their friends circle with specific skills when purchasing things such as technology, or post a wish list on their Facebook Wall to give their friends and family on Facebook a hint of what they would like for xmas or a birthday.

If you want to see more information from your friends simply encourage them to “like” things on the web, and by reciprocity you should also “like” things too so your friends can also see what you like in turn.  The new toolbar on Bing now has a universal “like” button that allows you to also give a thumbs up easily to any website on the web in case they do not have the Facebook “like” button integrated so now using Facebook “likes” has never been this easy.

Have you noticed how both Google and Bing have been active lately with the updates of social search methods in their search results ? Many traders rely heavily on traffic from search engines particularly the organic results, so it is important to stay abreast of what is happening in the landscape of search engines. Search Engines Are Concentrating On Social Search

Google and Bing recently made announcements regarding the integration in the search results of content retrieved from your social circle. Google has announced expansion plans for Social search. In the first expansion in social search, Google gave the opportunity to enter search results in real time with options in their navigation. For example, you could see what people around you, said in their blog, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and even Facebook pages.

However, these results were presented separately, accessible through the left navigation. The most recent announcement is different in that the Google social search results will be incorporated into the main search results. Another important fact is that some sites are expected to rank better or worse depending on the extent to which people have linked to its social search content through blogs or Twitter.

Currently, Google search results do not include social search “likes” from Facebook. We can only guess that Google did not have the same access to “Likes” due to the Microsoft Bing strategic relationship with Facebook. There is speculation however that this will eventually change. The impact can be huge, it is well known that people are very influenced by the opinions of others to the extent that opinions are expressed in a credible way. If our friends are online and commenting or liking content and providing feedback, these observations may have a huge influence on the potential customers selection.

Social Search Is Not New

Social search is not new, but the Semantic Web is emerging before our eyes. The competition between Google and Microsoft Bing and Facebook users will continue to offer marketing changes which should make the experience new and interesting. Even more important, is not whether people can find using social search, but it is what friends comments they find because the idea of ​​social search is to facilitate the decision making influence. As a consumer, you want to find useful information to help you make a decision.

So the best advice we have for traders is to think like a buyer. You must be actively building a community around good product performance. The problem products or services will be the big losers. Good products with good results that are supported by the marketing community would be a real commitment and win the favor of social search engine results.

A social search is a social result that links a researcher to requests for your search through a social network. Through social search, the researcher sees only results that are determined by the interests of its friends in the network. Google and Bing are two companies that have changed their search results with its own version of social search over a year ago. Since then they have continued to feature prominently in the results of social search and mixed the social search results with their regular search results in both the search engines.

The changes should not be taken lightly these changes point to the fact that both companies have acknowledged that the average Internet user, who now spends more time on Facebook may be demanding a new form of search.

Facebook Social Search

In fact, Facebook is a social network for many these days. It is the social center of our map, which is where we will find and read news. People will “like” a comment on articles and the widespread use of “like” buttons help us improve our graph of interest and become a way for us to express our approval for almost any thing on the web.

“Likes” have become so large that they factor in the Bing algorithm for social search results, and even have a place in how Blekko is organized. “Likes” also determine the popularity of the content that becomes the point inside and outside Facebook. Facebook and its grip on our attention raises the questions, do we still think of search queries on the basis of an explicit query? Or has the search in the traditional sense become outdated? Are social networks or information networks the new search engine? or are the new mobile applications the new search engines?

The Future Of Search Answer

The answer is probably all the above, because the investigation is being redefined by these factors. Let’s embrace the idea that the social side of the search is effortless and occurs as a familiar user experience, whether it is on mobile, social or search as certainly these need to be combined.

As the investigation unfolds certainly there is something much larger than the results of social search that need to be strengthened. The average Facebook user does not say “I want to search the most popular stories among my Facebook friends.” No. Facebook is doing the work for them by developing a search experience highlighting socially relevant content. A social search engine that requires the user to reflect on the content of the social network is one that seems to lose the point.

Right now the search companies are scratching the surface of what is possible when you’re growing social graph becomes closely related to the use of search. But as time passes, the experience of social search will be so fluid that the search user will not even know that it is occurring.

The message to marketers, according to Duane, is to invest in rich snippets through your websites. Bing wants to know what your content is and the more detail you can give Bing, the better you can tag it and make it more useful for Bing to crawl. Content is king, according to Duane.

Stick to generating organic links within your content and use relevant anchor text. The most powerful links are the ones embedded in the content these are organic links that a user can click on while they are reviewing the content and be able to click on links that provide additional quality content.

Rob says search marketers will have to work on retaining their core SEO practices, such as creating great content and be more engaging with their content, including deeper research of their audience, providing the right information they are seeking.

With great content comes the need to provide great links. Rob says social networks will become more important in passing referrals and or sharing content. Bing has formed a relationship with Facebook. Bing is looking to social networks as a great signal when it comes to featuring quality content.

Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Google told the Leadership Meeting, engaged the imagination and took the audience into a not too distant future where computers would do what they do best and help people do what they do best. Behind these services, he said, would be a flourishing display advertising business that he estimated would be a $200-billion dollar marketplace. The Keynote Speaker at the Leadership Meeting, By this sentiment he meant technology would help people remember things, would filter out the overload of information, would help people get where they’re going and do what they want to do no matter young or old, poor or wealthy, as long as they have access to a device, they would have information and tools to make their lives easier and more satisfying.

The IAB educates marketers, agencies, media companies and the wider business community about the value of interactive advertising. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) is comprised of more than 460 leading media and technology companies who are responsible for selling 86% of online advertising in the United States and holds an Annual Leadership Meeting. What are Bing Local Maps ?

Users can browse and search topographically shaded street maps for many cities worldwide. Maps include certain points of interest built in, such as metro stations, stadiums, hospitals, and other facilities. It is also possible to browse public user created points of interest. Searches can cover public collections, businesses or types of business, locations, or people. There are 5 primary types of street map views available to users: Road View, Aerial View, Bird’s Eye View, StreetSide View, and 3D View.

Snow, sunshine, a good film or two and good company does that sound like a good time to you?  Well it did to Bing, so they packed their bags and headed down to Park City, Utah to attend the Sundance Film festival. The Bing team were be down there showing the attendees how they can use Bing to navigate through Park City using Bing Maps, learn about the hottest films, and plan their festival activities. 

But we have to hand it to Bill Gates. When he showed up on Friday, he did so with a cause beyond just movies and he did show his face we might add that he was looking pretty relaxed, laughing and joking and seeming pleased to be at Sundance. He said he’d always wanted to come. Yes, he was there promoting a film, too  “Waiting for Superman” the new Davis Guggenheim documentary about education and you had to get him at the Bing Supper Club, obviously affiliated with Microsoft.

The History Of Bing Search 

Microsoft’s latest vehicle for achieving the elusive goal of Web dominance is Bing Search. Previously known as Kumo while in development, Bing Search replaces Microsoft’s Live Search brand and carries forward the company’s strategy for taking on Google and Yahoo. Besides introducing a new look to Microsoft’s search interface, Bing Search adds a spruced up navigation for search results, including a new left-hand navigation bar, a hover feature that lets users preview Web pages before visiting them, and a categorized search feature that groups search results by topic category.

Bing Search Versus Google Search

Whereas Google emphasizes a stark, quick-loading design and a list of highly relevant search results, Bing search results are organized into what it calls Search Categories subdivisions such as Web, Maps, Images, and Health. In a particular search, Bing Search creates Categories dynamically in response to the search query. Bing Search also packs some new smarts technology that Microsoft acquired through its purchase of the firm Powerset, which attempts to figure out the searcher’s intent rather than relying heavily on matching keywords to Web documents.

Microsoft has struggled in the past to compete with Google for search market share. According to Nielsen Online, Google owns 64 percent of the U.S. search market, with Yahoo at 16.3 percent. Microsoft will attempt to turn those numbers around with a reported $100 million marketing campaign for Bing Search.

The schools submitted what their needs were and Bing worked with DonorsChoose.org to create donations for the schools projects on their site with each rating and vote cast. One school received $100,000 and made the decision to work to help other local schools who submitted their projects.

When you join the Bing Rewards Preview, you will get opportunities to earn credits that are redeemable for rewards when you use Bing Social Search. Rewards on Bing Social Search offers may include earning credits for searching on Bing, setting your Home page to Bing, or trying out new Bing Social Search features. Download the Bing Bar which enables you to earn credits and shows you how many credits you have earned then sign-in with your Windows Live ID (or sign up for one if you don’t already have one), and complete the registration process. the Bing Bar displays the credits you have available after using Bing Social Search to redeem on the Reward Counter button. When you click the Reward Counter button, you will also be able to check your local account balance, as well as a list of current offers you can take advantage of to earn even more credits. You do not need to buy anything and there are no hidden fees. And when it’s time to redeem your credits, all rewards are shipped at no charge. However, Bing can only ship to addresses within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia Bing cannot ship to P.O. boxes or APO and FPO addresses.

The Bing Social Search Rewards Preview ends on September 30, 2011. The credits accumulated expire December 31, 2011.

Facebook and Bing have joined forces to bring data and profile social search to the Bing search engine. The partnership between Facebook and Bing marks a big leap forward in social search and also represents a huge step forward for Bing.  The Facebook and Bing teams presented a few examples of how the new social search would be useful.

When performing searches you will be able to find new restaurants that your friends have reviewed or have voted for as a like, pulling in movie likes from your friends or articles that have been shared about a car you might be thinking about buying. With the facebook like button now being used by more than two million sites and Facebook passing 500 million members, there is now enough scale to make that type of data surface on a regular basis in search. Using the Facebook and Bing search results, you can add people as friends or send them a message and start communicating with the friends you have added. Bing and Facebook are currently working on including like data from friends alongside each search result. The potential customer would be more inclined to click on a link in search results if their friends had liked it and recommended it as well.
