You can see if a Facebook friend is available by typing their name at the bottom of the chat list on the right hand side of the Facebook page. Friends appearing in the online chat is also available for video calls. A green dot next to the name of a friend shows they are online, and an icon in the shape of a moon means that they are online but inactive. To end a Facebook video call, simply close the video window.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour which is the youngest fleet of NASA’s orbiters, rose in the morning sky on Monday to start the last mission in its career spanning 19 years. Endeavour lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center at 8:56 am EDT (1256 GMT), from Launch Pad 39A. The shuttle and its crew of six are destined for the International Space Station, where they will spend 16 days to deliver supplies and also to complete a very important astrophysics experiment.

“Looks like a great day to launch Endeavour for the final time,” launch director Mike Leinbach told the crew as the minutes and seconds ticked down to liftoff. “On behalf of thousands of proud Americans who’ve been part of the journey, good luck, godspeed, see you back here on June 1.” Endeavour commander Mark Kelly also shared some profound words just before the launch. “As Americans, we endeavor to build a better life than the generation before and we endeavor to be a united nation,” Kelly said in the final moments at the launch pad. “In these efforts we are often tested. It is in the DNA of our great country to reach for the stars and explore. We must not stop.”

The Space Shuttle Program Is Being Retired

After today, NASA has a single shuttle mission planned before the shuttles are retired forever. The previous test launch in April 2011 was canceled when a heater that is used to protect a key power unit of the shuttle had a major failure just a few hours before takeoff. Engineers traced the problem to a power supply switch box connected to the heater. They replaced the switch box and about 20 feet of cable connected to it, and performed extensive testing to ensure that the problem was solved. There were no problems with the system at today’s launch.

Kelly is a veteran leader of the team of six, including Pilot Gregory H. Johnson and mission specialists Mike Fincke, Greg Chamitoff, Andrew Feustel, and the European Space Agency astronaut, Roberto Vittori. “I’m really excited and charged up for this mission!” Johnson tweeted on Twitter this morning. The launch was attended by a crowd of nearly 500,000 spectators, which included the wife of Commander Kelly, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Commander Kelly’s wife was back in Houston after being shot in January during a community outreach event outside a grocer in Tucson, Arizona. After the shooting, Kelly found some time to be with his wife and family, but decided in early February to continue training with the crew and to continue as the mission commander.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour Payload

Endeavour’s main payload is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), a $2 billion detector of particles that will be used to search cosmic rays that could help solve some of the most baffling cosmic mysteries, such as dark matter that is believed to be part of the universe. Besides the particle detector Endeavour is carrying a platform full of 14 000 pounds or 6350 kilograms of relief supplies to the space station, scheduled to run until at least 2020.

The final space flight scheduled for STS-135 Space Shuttle Atlantis will be later in July 2011. Where Atlantis astronauts will supply a final round of the International Space Station spare parts. After their mission, Endeavour, Atlantis and their sister orbiter Discovery are going to be sent to museums for public display. Endeavour is promised the California Science Center in Los Angeles, while Discovery will go to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and Atlantis will be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center.

Without the space shuttle program, NASA will have to pay for the travel of U.S. astronauts aboard Russian space craft until the new American option is available. NASA has sought to encourage the development of U.S. commercial spacecraft in future that will be used for carrying the future crews. Meanwhile, NASA will work to build a rocket that could carry man back to the moon, an asteroid, and eventually to the planet Mars.

Bing has added a new feature this week so that now Facebook integrates with the search results produced on Bing Shopping. Now users can create a shopping list on the Bing search engine and then display that shopping list on the users Facebook wall to get feedback from friends and family in your Facebook network. When shopping on Bing you now have the option to click “Add to List” for any item you find on Bing. A module of the shopping list appears in the bottom left of the screen so that users can follow the progress of the products and share them with friends and family on Facebook.

With Bing you do not have to shop alone again because you can build your shopping list to share, compare and discuss with your friends on Facebook. From finding the best price on something to getting opinions of people you know and trust on Facebook, or simply just asking if something suits you or not.

Bing Making Shopping Socially Based With Facebook

Bing says that the idea is to make the search experience more socially based so that it allows users to get their Facebook friends involved in the purchasing decisions. Customers may request the opinion of people in their friends circle with specific skills when purchasing things such as technology, or post a wish list on their Facebook Wall to give their friends and family on Facebook a hint of what they would like for xmas or a birthday.

If you want to see more information from your friends simply encourage them to “like” things on the web, and by reciprocity you should also “like” things too so your friends can also see what you like in turn.  The new toolbar on Bing now has a universal “like” button that allows you to also give a thumbs up easily to any website on the web in case they do not have the Facebook “like” button integrated so now using Facebook “likes” has never been this easy.

The company has sold 8 million sensor KINECTS worldwide in its first 60 days on the market, Microsoft had originally planned to sell 5 million and 50 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold to date.

Have you noticed how both Google and Bing have been active lately with the updates of social search methods in their search results ? Many traders rely heavily on traffic from search engines particularly the organic results, so it is important to stay abreast of what is happening in the landscape of search engines. More importantly, marketers need to understand where search marketing is going in relation to social search.

Search Engines Are Concentrating On Social Search

Google and Bing recently made announcements regarding the integration in the search results of content retrieved from your social circle. Google has announced expansion plans for Social search. In the first expansion in social search, Google gave the opportunity to enter search results in real time with options in their navigation. For example, you could see what people around you, said in their blog, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and even Facebook pages.

However, these results were presented separately, accessible through the left navigation. The most recent announcement is different in that the Google social search results will be incorporated into the main search results. Another important fact is that some sites are expected to rank better or worse depending on the extent to which people have linked to its social search content through blogs or Twitter.

Currently, Google search results do not include social search “likes” from Facebook. We can only guess that Google did not have the same access to “Likes” due to the Microsoft Bing strategic relationship with Facebook. There is speculation however that this will eventually change. The impact can be huge, it is well known that people are very influenced by the opinions of others to the extent that opinions are expressed in a credible way. If our friends are online and commenting or liking content and providing feedback, these observations may have a huge influence on the potential customers selection.

Social Search Is Not New

Social search is not new, but the Semantic Web is emerging before our eyes. The competition between Google and Microsoft Bing and Facebook users will continue to offer marketing changes which should make the experience new and interesting. Even more important, is not whether people can find using social search, but it is what friends comments they find because the idea of ​​social search is to facilitate the decision making influence. As a consumer, you want to find useful information to help you make a decision.

So the best advice we have for traders is to think like a buyer. You must be actively building a community around good product performance. The problem products or services will be the big losers. Good products with good results that are supported by the marketing community would be a real commitment and win the favor of social search engine results.

Google has more than 200 algorithms, and Bing claims more than 1,000. Both companies keep their search algorithms top secret. Adding new social cues has probably added a lot of extra algorithms as well. When you are logged into Facebook, the Bing search engine not only presents the results based on what you seem to “like”, but also what their friends also “like” and Friends of friends also “like”.

Bing was able to access information more easily using the Facebook OpenGraph than Google due to the Bing and Facebook partnership. Twitter is indexed more by Google than Facebook. In fact, Twitter is a leap forward in social indexing as it will allow a concept known as social authority.  Author Authority is a term that Google uses to describe authoritative people on Twitter that affect social cues. Bing calls this social authority. Authoritative voices on social networks will gather more attention in the search engine results.

Twitter has a strong impact on Google’s and also Bing’s indexing. What this means is that progress regarding the online marketing game has changed. Companies and brands will need to build strong social media profiles to still stay relevant to search engines in the future.

A social search is a social result that links a researcher to requests for your search through a social network. Through social search, the researcher sees only results that are determined by the interests of its friends in the network. Google and Bing are two companies that have changed their search results with its own version of social search over a year ago. Since then they have continued to feature prominently in the results of social search and mixed the social search results with their regular search results in both the search engines.

The changes should not be taken lightly these changes point to the fact that both companies have acknowledged that the average Internet user, who now spends more time on Facebook may be demanding a new form of search.

Facebook Social Search

In fact, Facebook is a social network for many these days. It is the social center of our map, which is where we will find and read news. People will “like” a comment on articles and the widespread use of “like” buttons help us improve our graph of interest and become a way for us to express our approval for almost any thing on the web.

“Likes” have become so large that they factor in the Bing algorithm for social search results, and even have a place in how Blekko is organized. “Likes” also determine the popularity of the content that becomes the point inside and outside Facebook. Facebook and its grip on our attention raises the questions, do we still think of search queries on the basis of an explicit query? Or has the search in the traditional sense become outdated? Are social networks or information networks the new search engine? or are the new mobile applications the new search engines?

The Future Of Search Answer

The answer is probably all the above, because the investigation is being redefined by these factors. Let’s embrace the idea that the social side of the search is effortless and occurs as a familiar user experience, whether it is on mobile, social or search as certainly these need to be combined.

As the investigation unfolds certainly there is something much larger than the results of social search that need to be strengthened. The average Facebook user does not say “I want to search the most popular stories among my Facebook friends.” No. Facebook is doing the work for them by developing a search experience highlighting socially relevant content. A social search engine that requires the user to reflect on the content of the social network is one that seems to lose the point.

Right now the search companies are scratching the surface of what is possible when you’re growing social graph becomes closely related to the use of search. But as time passes, the experience of social search will be so fluid that the search user will not even know that it is occurring.

Anne Kennedy, Beyond Ink, interviews Duane Forrester, Bing, and Rob Garner, iCrossing, on the future of search at SES New York 2011. The message to marketers, according to Duane, is to invest in rich snippets through your websites. Bing wants to know what your content is and the more detail you can give Bing, the better you can tag it and make it more useful for Bing to crawl. Content is king, according to Duane.

Stick to generating organic links within your content and use relevant anchor text. The most powerful links are the ones embedded in the content these are organic links that a user can click on while they are reviewing the content and be able to click on links that provide additional quality content.

Rob says search marketers will have to work on retaining their core SEO practices, such as creating great content and be more engaging with their content, including deeper research of their audience, providing the right information they are seeking.

With great content comes the need to provide great links. Rob says social networks will become more important in passing referrals and or sharing content. Bing has formed a relationship with Facebook. Bing is looking to social networks as a great signal when it comes to featuring quality content.

Duane says social networking started with popular reviews then moved on to expert reviews and today we’re moving to more trusted reviews. Anne asks Rob and Duane to comment on the future of augmented reality.
